Measuring Up The Site

We had yet another visit to the section. We just can’t get enough!! :) Ben’s creative little or should I say BIG brain has come up with a pretty crazy idea of building over the stream with 2 house pods and a bridge. I myself am struggling to visualise what this will actually look like and if it will actually fit on the site.

Therefore we had a wee trip to good old Bunnings to get some sticks and string to try map it out on the section. It was quite fun measuring out the design on the section but it wasn’t an easy task trying to make the string stay in straight lines due to it getting tangled in all the bush and shrubs. May have fell in the stream a couple of times while trying to do this too. Hmmm feeling like I am a bit out of comfort zone but it sure was exciting to see that the design could actually fit!! :)

  1. Good on you guys for having the vision and courage to build your dream.
It has to be right for you with the section being on the market for so long, until you both came along.
    It’s meant to be.

    Best Wishes.

  2. What a wonderful idea that we get to see your progress! Can hadly wait to see more….

You look an amazing couple and hope your dreams come true…

  3. Loved Libby and Ben on the block! Good to see you still at designing houses, this time for a house you will live in! Love the natural idea and environmental potentials for the space. Water feature is a must.

I’ll keep checking back to see how it’s going. Good luck!

    • Hey Cameron, thanks for the message. Yeah, it was fun doing The Block with my sister Libby, but really can’t wait to build a place to live in, especially since it will be a dream home for Kylie & I!

  4. Hi there
Good on you guys for having the energy and such great enthusiasm to build your dream home
Will be following with great interest

    Kitty

    • Thanks so much Kitty. :) Thanks for following us. :) Let’s hope the enthusiasm lasts the whole project even when I’m sure there will be some obstacles! :)

  5. I really enjoyed your show and followed it religiously. Used to live in Auckland, so am a bit envious of all the beaches you will have access to. It looks like an awesome site, I love the bush, so cant wait to see your house. Good on you both. My grandparents used to live in Castor Bay so have very happy memories there. Good luck.

  6. what a fantastic dream…hope you have great support…we are pro energy efficiency in our business…we sell insulation ……i believe in insulation and high R Values…have you considered a high strength pre-fab build…might be your answer for the bridge:)…all the best

    • Hey Carl, thanks for getting in touch. We’re definitely wanting an efficient home that’s well insulated, exploring lots of options to achieve that at the moment. Cheers!

  7. Yay. just happened to come across a link on stuff.co.nz. Will be exciting to watch you build your dream home. The section looks amazing (though a little jungle book like). Good luck and have fun.

  8. HI Ben and Kylie, great house. Looking to do something similar on a sloped site in Whangarei. A couple of questions if you can help me out:
    1) Do you have an estimated cost/m^2 (for someone without your connections)?
    2) If I wanted to use your design as a beginning for my design, would drawings or plans be avaialbe for purchase? If so from who (Haven?)
    3) Are you happy with the SIPS and how that all worked out?

    Thanks much
    Roland

    • Hey Roland, thanks, we love it. Yeah of course, I’d estimate based on the increased costs in building since we built our home, along with the quality fixtures/fittings we used, $4,500 – $5,000 per sqm. We designed the house ourselves and would rather keep them for ourselves sorry. But yes, we love the SIPs and would build with them again for sure. Formance are now manufacturing everything in NZ as well which is great. Good luck with the build and feel free to get in contact again. Cheers, Ben.
